"Shadow" Fleur-des-Lis washcloth pattern by Noelle Williams Dempsey http://www.littlehedgehog.org This is a "shadow" or "illusion" version of the fleur-des-lis washcloth pattern I designed in September 2005 to send to victims of hurricane Katrina. I was inspired to make it into an illusion pattern since I've been working on a Shadow Shawl designed by Kinver Knits. This new washcloth design has the same shape and size as the older pattern but now uses a special technique with two colors of yarn and a specific series of knits and purls so you can only see the fleur des lis design if you look at the cloth from an angle, if you look at it straight down you can't see the design! Magic! The same copyright rules apply: this pattern is free for personal and charitable use. So if you make this to sell, please only do so for charity! And please contact me at nolnoodle@comcast.net I'd love to hear about your charity and see photos of your versions! Yarn: **An important part of this pattern is to use two colors that contrast. A solid color and a contrasting variegated color works beautifully as well.** Any worsted or dk kitchen cotton is fine, I've used Debbie Bliss Cotton DK, Sugar n Cream, Peaches n Cream, Lion Brand cotton. As long as it's cotton and washable it should be fine. For this sample, I'm using black and gold Debbie Bliss Cotton Cashmere, to emphasize that the fleur des lis is also the symbol for the football team, The New Orleans Saints. Gauge: Doesn't really matter. The size and tightness of the fabric will depend on the yarn and size of the needles Needle size: Generally 6-8 US If you want a really loose fabric, go up to 10, if you want a really tight one, go down to 5. I used a 6 in my sample. Abbreviations: BO - Cast off CO - Cast on (your choice of style, I usually use the long tailed method) FC - first color k - knit k1tbl - knit one stitch through the "back of the loop" p - purl SC - second color sl1 - slip one stitch to the right needle as if to purl wyif- with the yarn held to the front as if to purl Notes: For a neater edge this is a technique I learned from the shadow shawl pattern- At end of every row, bring yarn to front, slip the last stitch (wyif sl1) At the beginning of every row, knit first stitch through the back of the loop (k1tbl) Row References- At the end of each group of 4 rows is a reference to the corresponding row in the original pattern - for this pattern it takes 4 rows of knitting to make the illusion version of the original. I think it makes the design easier to keep up with The pattern begins with 3 rows of garter stitch in the first color, has a group of garter edges written into the pattern on each row, and ends with 2 rows of garter in the first color before the BO row Pattern: Using FC CO 30 stitches (the garter border is written into the pattern's stitch count) Rows 1 - 3 USING FC Knit every stitch first three
